The Living Intelligence of Sandhana Kalpana
Among the most fascinating achievements of Ayurvedic pharmaceutics is Sandhana Kalpana—the disciplined use of fermentation in the preparation of medicines.
Asava and Arishta are not herbal syrups with alcohol added to them.
Their pharmaceutical identity emerges through a controlled process in which the prescribed liquid preparation, sweetening substances, fermentative material and other Dravyas are brought together under conditions suitable for Sandhana.
Broadly, Arishta preparations commonly involve a decoction-based liquid phase, while Asava preparations are generally prepared without first making such a decoction; the exact procedure must always follow the particular classical reference.
During Sandhana, naturally generated alcohol can assist extraction and preservation of constituents within the preparation.
For the manufacturer, this creates an unusual responsibility.
The vessel and environment, sanitation, temperature, fermentation behaviour, maturation, filtration and finished-product characteristics all require observation and control.

Ayurveda does not regard a medicinal substance only through the question: "What ingredient is this?"
Dravya possesses its own Rasa, Guna, Virya, Vipaka, Prabhava and Karma, but pharmaceutical processing also matters. Through Samskara, substances may be cleaned, purified, triturated, decocted, concentrated, fermented, cooked with Sneha, distilled or subjected to other formulation-specific processes.
That is why the same Dravya appearing in a Churna, Kwatha, Taila, Ghrita or Avaleha should not be assumed to represent an identical pharmaceutical preparation. The Kalpana is part of the intelligence of the medicine.
